An OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) is a medical doctor specializing in both obstetrics and gynecology, covering care for pregnant women and the female reproductive system. In contrast, a gynecologist focuses exclusively on the latter, addressing issues like contraception, menstrual problems, and menopause. All OB-GYNs are gynecologists, but not all gynecologists are trained in obstetrics.

A pelvic exam at the gynecologist typically involves 2 main components:

1. Visual Inspection of External Genitalia: The doctor examines the external genital area for any abnormalities, irritation, or signs of infection.

2. Speculum Exam: A speculum is inserted into the vagina to visualize the inner walls, cervix, and collect samples for tests such as the Pap smear. This part allows the gynecologist to check for any abnormalities or signs of cervical issues.

The pelvic exam is a routine procedure used to monitor and maintain reproductive health, detect potential issues, and screen for conditions such as cervical cancer. It is often recommended as part of regular gynecological check-ups.

A colposcopy is conducted similarly to a standard pelvic exam. While lying on the examination table, a speculum gently widens the vagina, and a solution is applied to the cervix and vaginal walls to emphasize any abnormal tissue.

The colposcope is then positioned at the vaginal opening, utilizing a light and magnifier to closely examine areas requiring further evaluation. If a biopsy is necessary, it is performed concurrently.

This entire procedure typically takes about 2 - 5 minutes and is conveniently conducted in the office.
