Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a follow-up procedure that’s usually recommended after an abnormal Pap smear. It allows your provider to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a magnifying tool called a colposcope.
This procedure helps detect abnormal cells that can be precursors of cervical cancer. In some cases, a biopsy may be taken during the colposcopy. It is performed in-office and is generally well-tolerated with minimal discomfort and no downtime required.
Dilation and Curettage
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure used to remove tissue from the inside of the uterus. It may be performed to diagnose or treat uterine conditions such as abnormal bleeding, polyps, or following a miscarriage.
During a dilation and curettage, the cervix is gently dilated and a special instrument is used to clear the uterine lining. The procedure is usually done under sedation and completed in a short period of time. It’s a safe and effective tool that can provide diagnosis or relief depending on the underlying condition.

Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a procedure used to treat heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding by removing or destroying the lining of the uterus. This is an excellent option for women who are not planning future pregnancies and are looking for an alternative to hysterectomy.
In-office ablation techniques are safe, quick, and effective, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days. The procedure is typically performed using local anesthesia and light sedation, making it a convenient solution for managing abnormal uterine bleeding.
Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows providers to view the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope. It’s commonly used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, polyps, fibroids, or recurrent miscarriages.
A hysteroscopy is minimally invasive and can often be completed in the office under light sedation or local anesthesia. In addition to diagnosing uterine issues, it can also be used to treat certain conditions by removing growths or correcting structural abnormalities.
IUD Insertion Under Anesthesia (Sedation)
While many patients tolerate IUD (intrauterine device) placement without difficulty, some may benefit from undergoing the procedure under sedation, especially if they have a history of pain, anxiety, or a sensitive cervix.
At Maiden Lane Medical, we offer IUD insertion with mild sedation for enhanced comfort. This office-based option ensures that patients can receive long-term contraception in a stress-free environment. The process is safe and efficient and only requires a short recovery period.
LEEP
LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) is a common and effective procedure used to remove abnormal or precancerous cells from the cervix. It involves using a thin wire loop heated by an electrical current to carefully remove the affected tissue. The procedure is typically performed after an abnormal Pap smear or colposcopy.
LEEP is a short procedure, usually lasting only a few minutes. It is done under local anesthesia with IV sedation. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities within a day or two. Apart from treating cervical dysplasia, this technique can be used for further tissue analysis.

Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to repair or tighten the vaginal canal. It is often sought by patients who have experienced changes due to childbirth, aging, or trauma, and may be performed for both functional and aesthetic reasons.
When performed in-office, vaginoplasty offers a discreet and convenient option for those seeking to improve vaginal tone, support, or appearance. Recovery is typically smooth, and patients are given detailed guidance to ensure optimal healing.

Vulvar Biopsies
A vulvar biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue from the vulva for laboratory analysis. This test is often performed when abnormalities such as lesions, discoloration, or persistent irritation are present. The tissue sample can be evaluated for conditions like lichen sclerosus, infections, or cancer.
The procedure is quick and is done using local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Afterward, patients may experience mild soreness, but recovery is generally quick and uncomplicated. Timely biopsy results are essential for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.
